unfortunately, not all the fixes that I made in the release branch
have yet been merged into the devel trunk. version testing is one of
those. it doesn't affect you (on the devel branch) because you are
using older utilities, but things have changed with newer utilities
and I had to make changes to accommodate both. in particular version
checking for c++ was affected.

so the man page clearly documents the -lt operator and yet your
implementation of test complains about it. are you sure that your
implementation of test actually corresponds to this man page? maybe
your path picks up a different and incompatible version of test.
