forget what I said. we can always use [a-z] because it will work as
expected on System V and will harmlessly convert square brackets into
themselves on GNU (of course, there are never any square brackets in
this input, so the point is really academic :-)
The fix is now checked in the inlin-opcode-map branch. I'll merge into
the devel trunk asap.
