just to let you: I am currently logged in at sics and trying to figure
out the test program on their sunos installation. -O3 indeed
optimizes everything away. The "option 2" that I suggested previously
works to convince gcc that the code is actually reachable... but the
code itself doesn't work properly. I am still trying to figure out
why, by studying the assembly code.
